Did You Know: Easter Lilies Are Poisonous to Cats

Did You Know: Easter lilies are toxic to cats.
Happy Easter from For Tails Only! We hope you're enjoying this beautiful season with your family - human and furry alike!

We'd like to kick off our brand new Did You Know series with a very important topic: Easter lilies and cats.

They've been a quintessential Easter decoration for ages, but according to CBSNews.com, all parts of the Easter lily plant - leaf, pollen and flower - are toxic to kitties. Ingesting even the smallest bit of an Easter lily can cause severe - and often fatal - kidney damage. The plant causes crystals to form, which then shred the kidney as they pass through. Scary!

Early treatment is key to recovery. If you know or suspect your cat has eaten an Easter lily, call your vet or after-hours clinic as soon as possible.

Best bet? Admire Easter lilies from afar and keep them out of your home. If you receive one as a gift, keep it out of kitty's reach or donate it to a church or petless family.
